ONDO 2020: NGO urges Government to create enabling environment for women in politics.

A non-profit for women empowerment, The Voice for Women Initiative (VWI) has called on the Nigerian Government to make it easy for women to hold an elective position in politics to enable more women leaders in the country.

Speaking in a rally , VWI spokesperson, Madam Olufunke Folorunsho, described the challenges and intimidation women experience in the cause of their political aspiration.

Folorunsho further pleaded that Government should not side-line women and introduce gender friendly policies which will encourage Girl-child to be bold in every areas of life.

She further mentioned the reoccurring Violence and hate speech against women candidates, which has sobered them in the political space.

She illustrated the likes of Kogi election late last year where SDP Candidate, Natasha Akpoti and her supporters were physically assaulted by political thugs, and noted that, Mrs Jumoke Ajasin – Anifowoshe, daughter of the former Governor of Ondo State, Pa Adekunle Ajasin, is currently the only woman who has publicly declared interest in the Ondo race under the platform of All Progressive Congress (APC).

Folorunsho employed more women to boldly come out as Ajasin-Anifowoshe did, inrrespective of any intimidation that might arise from counterparts and believe women will rally round them.

She called on President Muhammadu Buhari, APC Leaders, in the likes of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, Chief Akande, Comrade Oshiomole, Ondo APC Chairman, Mr. Adetimehin, and Ondo Woman Leader, Madam Renike to stand a ground against violence, discrimination and intimidation, which are the major challenges faced by women folks in Politics.“As an NGO, we are calling on the Federal Government of Nigeria to support and encourage women who are willing to contest for elections in Nigeria, and women should be better sensitized to take political offices. Ambassador Dorcas, a women’s right campaigner in her closing remark, also called on the women to come out boldly, take charge and contest for political offices, especially in the coming Edo and Ondo 2020 Gubernatorial elections, which will come up in the month of September and October respectively.
