On our Business segment this week. Managing Editor of Centrepoint news, Miss Olatokunbo Maha had a chat with Miss Yewande Omobomi of Unique Consult travels and tours. She touched on a lot of issues and challenges. It was a rewarding talk. Here is our chat. Read and Enjoy.
Tokunbo: What’s your full name?
Yewande: Yewande Omobomi
Tokunbo: Do you have an alias (that is, an a.k.a.)? If yes what is it?
Yewande: (smiles) Wandy
Tokunbo: In one sentence, tell us what you do.
Yewande: I am a Consultant at Unique Consult Travels and Tours. I am also a Shopper. By God’s grace, I plan tour packages, do visa processing, get affordable flight tickets, and just any travel-related service anywhere in the world. Another thing that I do is shopping business. We get computers, phones, food items, household materials, cars, etc for people and deliver across Nigeria.
Tokunbo: How did you get started on your present career path?
Yewande: Travelling has always been a hobby for me. I like moving from one place to another, visiting cities. I believe in God and he gave me direction. I started with Tour Guide as a foreign student in Ghana. Many people were calling to ask me about Ghana and life there. They’d call to ask about ticket, hotel reservations among others. So, I chose to do a business, with the backup of holy spirit, out of it. I had to also attend classes on an IATA Foundation in Travel and Tourism. That’s how I started.
Tokunbo: We all face challenges. What challenges have you faced so far? You can be as detailed as you want.
Yewande: Challenges, to me, are a part of life. No matter how much you have grown or what height you have reached in your career path, they will always come. Ability to overcome and stay strong is all that matters. As a female entrepreneur in aviation sector, it has not been easy at all. But I keep telling potential clients that if they find a lady in a male dominated field, they can be sure that she knows what she is doing. I also always have challenges with the Nigerian identity and this is what I don’t see it being eradicated in a short term. Many people find it hard to entrust money with Nigerians. I had a big one when some German Tourists contacted us for a Tour package in West Africa. They were ready to visit but refused to pay any deposit to plan their tour package until they saw me. I chose to convince them, if that is all I will achieve, and gave them the best that they gave nice reviews and referrals in the end. Another one is the dynamics of Immigration rules; today it’s smooth, tomorrow it’s all negative surprises from Western countries and their aviation rules. But by God’s grace. We are pushing through. In my shopping business, the issues are not so much but many customers want to know whom they are dealing with and which is reasonable. So, we try to let them know us very well as our reputation is also very paramount.
Tokunbo: Who/What/Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Yewande: I draw inspiration from my father in heaven. Truly, God alone gave me direction.
Tokunbo: Tell us about one of the projects you worked on or activities you engaged in that really made you believe in yourself…no matter how small.
Yewande: Several activities. We have planned tour and travel packages and it went well. Pictures speak million words. We have some on our social media pages. There was a time we did a direct marketing for Unique Shopper and we got lots of buyers. I was amazed. All these are enough to keep me going with the fact that I am an optimist.
Tokunbo: What opportunities are you looking for or open to taking advantage of?
Yewande: Opportunities are unlimited. We are ready to plan travel and tour packages for individuals, families, groups, companies and organizations. We surely will give them their aspired taste of nature’s wonders. If there are goods and products you want us to get, just give us a list and pay. We will do the negotiations on your behalf and only take 3% and have them delivered to you across the country. We ease you of the stress.
Tokunbo: What do you think about youth empowerment? How can the Nigerian youth be empowered?
Yewande: Youth empowerment in Nigeria cannot be overemphasized. It is a necessary initiative to a country’s development. Governments should have a yearly budget for youth empowerment. When youths are empowered, the burden is lessened. However, it should not be a yardstick to measuring job opportunities. Nigerian youths need job. As much as it is good to empower the young people, job creation is of utmost importance.
Tokunbo: How can readers connect with you online and/or offline?
Yewande: Readers can connect with us via our social media platforms, call, send message or visit our office.
