The federal government has disclosed that whenever the Russian COVID-19 vaccine arrives in Nigeria, it would be evaluated by relevant agencies before it is approved for citizens.

The minister of state for health, Adeleke Mamora told a news conference in Abuja on Thursday, September 10, that reports claiming the Russian COVID-19 was already in Nigeria were untrue.

Mamora disclosed that NAFDAC and NIPRD would subject the vaccine to tests whenever it arrives in Nigeria.

He said the federal government is yet to receive the Russian vaccine, noting that all the ministry of health got was a memoir informing Nigeria of what Russia is working on, Mamora disclosed that the Russian vaccine is still in the third phase of clinical trials.

He said the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) would have to certify the vaccine safe whenever it arrives in Nigeria.

“Even when the vaccine is ready at all, it will still be subjected to our own processes here. That is why have NAFDAC and NIPRD,” he said.
